Speigeltent in King George Square

King George Square doesn't have too many redeeming features these days since the unveiling of the giant concrete slab. As part of the Brisbane Festival, this beautiful Speigeltent is currently sitting in the middle of it at the moment making it look infinitely better. Inside there is a plenty of comedy, cabaret and music. Outside, you can enjoy a beer in the beer garden (I'll show you that tomorrow).

See what's on at the Speigeltent here.

Walking With Dinasaurs at the Entertainment Centre

As part of the promotion for this show earlier in the year, some of the puppeteers visited our local school in West End. They kindly gave the kids who were flood-affected free tickets to take their families which meant I got to go along for free! Hurray!

The models are incredibly detailed and so life like.

The Origin Species

If you're not from Queensland or New South Wales, there's every chance you don't know or care about the State of Origin competition. It's a good-humoured rivalry if the atmosphere on Caxton Street is anything to go by. Queensland versus New South Wales in a three game Rugby League play-off. Players' "state of origin" is based (I think) on the first team they joined as a professional.

Last night's game was the first of the three and was held at Suncorp Stadium. The next game will be held down in Sydney in June and third back up here again in July. I didn't manage to catch the game. It was a preventative measure as my eyes usually get sore from all the eye rolling.... but it sounds like it was a nail biter. Queensland won! Hooray!

(This is when you adopt the bulldog stance and loudly growl "QUEENSLANDER!!! RRRRR!")

Street Performer, South Bank

Despite the fire juggling, mini bike wheelies and knife juggling on a 9 foot high unicycle, the boy in the blue was a touch bored.

Gwen In Purgatory

Dedicated to my friend Gwen who recently became more familiar with Robina train station than she might have preferred.

Mount Nebo Open Mic Night

Over the weekend, I went up to visit friends in Mount Nebo, a small mountain community north west of Brisbane. Once a month they have an open mic night. Everyone is welcome to join in... music, comedy, poetry or whatever you're good at...bring a plate of food to share and your own drinks and settle in for the night - great fun! Just remember to rug up - it's freezing up there.

Mary Steps Out

It's 100 years since Mary MacKillop died and to celebrate, there was a re-enactment performance in City Hall on Sunday. She arrived in an old Cobb and Co. coach and stepped out into the King George Square sunshine.
Did you know she's on her way to being Australia's first saint? Read all about her saintly ways here.
Thanks to MaryAnne Bland for the photo.

Come up to the lab and see what's on the slab...

Halloween night in Caro Mio cafe in Woolloongabba attracted an assorted bag of Rocky Horror fans for a night of tapas and tranny-appreciation. Despite it being a good few years since I'd seen the movie, I still knew most of the words and had a brilliant night. This group were among the best dressed with Mark (I hope I've got his name right), second from left, getting a bottle of champagne on the house for his Frank'n'furter efforts.

17 Browning Street

17 Browning Street is a big old Queenslander house over 2 levels. From 1937 it was a rooming house until it was sealed shut, frozen in time since 2002 when the owner died. Everything in it remains exactly as she had left it down to the sheets on the bed and the crockery on the shelves. Elizabeth Jeffs wrote a book about the house and the lives that passed through it.

During the recent Brisbane Festival, they re-opened the house so you could wander through the rooms, hear sounds and see actors playing the parts of the residents going about their daily business. It was great wandering around, being able to poke about in people's rooms and belongings! This lady was playing the part of Juliette. She spent the whole time I was there wandering around the garden idly hanging out washing on a broken Hills Hoist with a far away look in her eyes.
