Story Bridge Climbers

You can do a "Story Bridge Climb" which means donning a blue and grey jumpsuit (so that you blend in with the bridge and the sky) and climbing the steps to the summit and checking out the river 80 metres below. I went on the climb a few years ago and loved it but I found it frustrating not being able to take pictures. Anyway, the organisers of the climb have introduced a Photographic Climb where you can bring your own camera and snap away to your heart's content. It's limited to just the camera - no bag, extra lenses, tripod or anything else.... but it looks like you get some great shots from up there. That is on my list for 2012.

New Farm Flood Marker

 

Despite the flood waters ebbing months ago, I spotted this just recently on Brunswick Street, near the park.

Dry Run

This is what is commonly known as "the flood sculpture" in New Farm by the river. The artwork by artist Richard Tipping is called "Watermark". I think it's supposed to represent the water level of the 1974 flood (to the tops of the f, l and d). During the floods this year the water lapped around it's base. I didn't get a shot at the time but you can see one here.

Despite my brief amusement with what was going on below the photos, the exhibition itself was what I was there for. It is a brilliant and provocative assortment of images taken by photojournalists from around the world in the past year . If you get a chance to get down to the Powerhouse before June 26th, I recommend it. Failing that, check out the winners on their website.

Knots and Tangles

Looking up at the amazing aerial root systems of a Moreton Bay Fig tree. This one is in New Farm Park but they are found all over Brisbane. I love them. They provide something to eat for our large fruit-bat population and fantastic shelter and shade for the human population. The canopy is huge and dense and the spreading limbs can be a mass of tangles or gnarly and twisted like the veins on an aged pair of hands.

So... going back to my roots (yeah)... and I couldn't decide which one was most representative.... so here's all three. Click on a photo for an enlargement and have a great weekend. It's going to be 27 degrees and sunny here in Brisbane - perfect weather to get out and about. I'll be at work in a darkened room. Aargh! 

Walk This Way

This wooden walkway weaves its way through the huge aerial roots of Moreton Bay Fig trees in New Farm Park. You can make a secret hide-out in the circular chambers that the roots create and you can climb up them and onto the main branches of the trees. Excellent fun!

August Theme Day: Bright Colours (and Traffic Stopping Art number 49)

It's a farmer with a pizza which I think is representing the fact that we are in New Farm. I suppose they didn't have any of this here new-fangled pizza back when it was proper farm land.

This is another of Brisbane's many painted traffic signal boxes and I think suitably colourful for today's City Daily Photo monthly theme of Bright Colours.

(Edit) The artist was J.A. Clark and he was standing on Bowen terrace (at what is now the Wilson Outlook Reserve) looking at the section of the river which now boasts the story bridge so well done to Jake, 'me', anonymous and no doubt tff for spotting it correctly!  Spring Hill stands out with the windmill on the left and the newly erected "old" Parliament House on the right. It's a gigantic painting - I think 5 or 6 feet long - and it hangs in the Queensland Art Gallery. Definitely worth a visit!

Happy Birthday, Powerhouse

 

This is the entrance to the Brisbane Powerhouse, a major arts venue here in Brizzy. It's housed in the shell of an old power station which was built in stages between 1928 and 1940. It has these old brick walls that are really high. This year, it is celebrating its 10th birthday. Download the program here.
