Traffic Stopping Art (number 60)

This fabulous signal box can be found on the corner of Upper Edward Street and Astor Terrace in Spring Hill, near the Queensland Art Society building. It's by Francis Rowland Wregg whose work I have featured in the past two signal box posts. The bird design is a nod to the work of the brilliant M C Escher.

Nearly done

The under-whelming "Soleil" building is nearing completion and has taken it's place on the Brisbane skyline, dwarfing everything nearby. 464 apartments, 74 floors high. Prices start at A$370K.

Orange Flowers in Cathedral Square

The council gardeners have planted a sea of orange flowers in the square opposite St. John's Cathedral - oooh lovely!

Here we are with another one of Brisbane's painted traffic signal boxes. I've posted this one before which is scandalous seeing as there are so many more un-posted that deserve my attention... but this is from a different angle and I quite like the rest of the shot.

Q. Can I Take a Gander Round Your Verandah?

A... Only if it's house-trained. (boom boom!)

Queenslander houses are built on stilts to welcome any available breeze. Many have them have these great little verandahs which would definitely the place to be for me on a warm summer evening... perhaps with a nice cold drink and a few snacks, watching the world go by.

This is a piece of public art in King Edward Park, Spring Hill commissioned by Brisbane City Council. It's called "Still Life With Landscape" by Robert Parr (1990)

Depending on where you stand, you can frame Turbot Street, Wickham Terrace or yourself and your friends.

I love this zany one. It's the Brisbane Girls' Grammar School traffic signal box at the pedestrian crossing on Gregory Terrace...by Paul Robertson.

Baptist Tabernacle

This is the Baptist Tabernacle in Wickham Terrace. It's a big imposing church built about 150 years ago by architect Richard Gailey who seemed to have a bit of a Protestant work ethic...er despite being a Baptist. If you are interested in the buildings in Brisbane that Gailey has left behind, this post in Your Brisbane: Past and Present is well worth a look. I was after a shot from inside of the big glass window but it was closed. Still, the outside's not too shabby. Particularly with that fetching red trim!
(That other building in the background is a hint at Queensland's more common colonial architecture)

Changing Rooms

This place is great. Built in 1886, according to the front of the building, all the little coloured changing rooms are grouped around the pool (gents on one side, ladies on the other). There's a wooden viewing gallery upstairs.

The length of the pool is 23m.... which is just long enough to be able to work out your next multiple of 23 as you swim a lap... and to not forget where you're up to when you get to the each end.

Jacob's Ladder Gets The Red Carpet Treatment

This set of stairs, known as Jacob's Ladder, links Wickham Terrace with Edward Street. It's park of King Edward Park which has just had a colourful new facelift. I think it looks great!
