Haus of Fun

This is a rather funky combined chair/table that you can sit on and have your lunch outside the State Library in South Bank. Very handy if it's raining (vertically) or the sun is beating down. It was originally part of the Unlimited Asia Pacific Design Triennial back in October 2010. The designer is Alexander Lotersztain and the piece is called Haus. His website is here.

Eclipse Shmiclipse

Last night's lunar eclispe was a bit of a let down. The moon was supposed to be a blood-red colour as it rose but was covered in a bank of cloud. As it turned out, I was standing in completely the wrong place with buildings of the city blocking my view so I wouldn't have seen it anyway. Luckily, my little outing to Kurilpa Bridge wasn't completely in vain. I turned around and got a great sunset instead. This is the view looking towards the State Library (left) and the Gallery of Modern Art (right) with the Skyneedle in the distance.

Strike A Pose

Brisbane Square is quite a striking place. There's the library building (pictured with the scaffolding-y bit up the side), the Treasury Casino building, funky restaurants and cafes, the new Wednesday farmers' market and these gigantic metal balls made from welded vegetable steamers. (hmmm. I'll do a post about them sometime soon) I took this picture about 11 or 12 days ago as part of my 100 Strangers project. Ali was standing on top of one of the balls, posing for his friends. It didn't occur to me to ask him how he got up and I had walked away before he got down but while he was up there, he looked very comfortable. He must be a dab hand at Pilates.

After All This Time

This is taken from the monumental arch on the southern side of Victoria Bridge. The arch is from the previous Victoria Bridge which was demolished in 1969. Around Anzac day time, wreaths of poppies are placed next to it to remember those who fought and died for Australia in the wars. Also there are wreaths of flowers in remembrance of an 11 year old Greek boy, Hector Vasyli, who was killed nearby in 1918 "as a result of a lamentable accident" so the plaque there says. According to Wikipedia it was a traffic accident that happened while he was waving to soldiers returning from the First World War. Anyway... when I stopped by last week, there were flowers and cards aplenty especially from members of Brisbane's strong and vibrant Greek community.

Since I started this blog this I have been out at night with a camera twice so I'm in need of some practice. This is my first attempt at a "Brisbane by night" shot with the camera balanced on the balustrade of the William Jolly Bridge. Must invest in a tripod...

View From The Library

This is the view from two of the dozens of slanty windows in Brisbane Square library. Through the window on the left, you get a glimpse of the Brisbane River. The window on the right shows traffic on Victoria Bridge and the Wheel of Brisbane.

The Longest Mud Painting In The World!

Over the weekend, Brisbane Square library teamed up with some people from Northey Street City Farm to hold a workshop where people could come along and contribute to the world's longest mud painting. Being a Northey Street initiative, it is completely biodegradable and will provide compost for future Brisbane vegetables! In the meantime, the painting is being added to as it is rolled up and moved around different parts of the community. It is made from newspaper glued with flour and water and painted on using different coloured muds found in and around Brisbane. It's going on display at the Autumn Equinox Arts Festival in Northey Street Farm on March 21st - by which time they expect it to be over 500 metres long!

Traffic Stopping Art (number 8)

Another signal box for you. Today's offering comes from Brisbane Sqaure infront of the colourful new City Library. It caught my eye because is it set so far in from the road that it looks a bit lost...

Library Space Invaded!

The state library at South Bank is teeming with vidiots at the moment for the Game On exhibition - an interactive look at the history of computer games. No doubt there are plenty of 30/40-something dads dragging their kids along to show them what "real" computer games are all about... None of this XBox/Wii nonsense: sit down and get stuck into some table space invaders!
