Backstage

This is the third of three snapshots of Burnett Lane before it goes under the knife for a $2.5m makeover. This is the back of some buildings on Adelaide Street. Things I like about this wall: the red door, the crumbling old chimney being held up by those rusty brackets and the contrasting lines of the two stairwells. Lit properly, this could be a feature!

Yes, yes, this is delightful. Well, the top half is. All that modern tacked on stuff can go ... the steps and stuff.

That bit surrounding the red door has sooo much potential. Look at the decaying wood in the hob and the boarded up door and that round rusty manhole .. this has so much beauty.

Now I am fearful what they mean by "makeover" ...

That door had me fooled. It looks so small, like a toy door in a dolls house. Red. It's a good colour. so dramatic and demanding. I love the muscleyness of industrial sites. They feel risky and powerful.

Got to admit I'm all about the old, I love the character this building has. I hope they don't sanitise the view too much during the makeover, gentrification often strips all the character out of a place. Fingers crossed...
