Theme Day: Best of 2009 (and Skywatch Friday)

Today is City Daily Photo's "Best Photo Of 2009" theme day.

Here's the view looking directly down Charlotte Street to the casino. It's taken from a third of the way up the Riparian Plaza building during Brisbane's annual Riverfire celebrations in September. I've cropped it from the original photo posted here. The Brisbane sky lit up in a frenzy of fireworks which lasted 30 minutes, turning it a smoky indigo colour. Click on the picture for a detailed view.

Before the night that I took this picture, I had never taken photos of fireworks before. I went on the internet that afternoon and got a few handy hints and when the time came, I just couldn't believe the results - it was a real confidence booster. It helped also that I had access to the 16th floor of a building right in the middle of things. I didn't notice until afterwards how the lights of the fireworks behind me were reflected on the closest buildings in the picture.

Did some firework shots last summer for the first time as well, and it's true that it makes you feel great! Marvelous shot!

It's one of those shots that makes me feel I can hear the fireworks and the music. Love the way they've lit up the whole scene. Super.

Well done. I tried to get some local fireworks on NYE and failed miserably (even after reading how it should be done), took me so long to position the tripod and get the right focal length that I missed them and just ended up with a few trails - they were, however, beautifully focussed.

Very impressive. I've never tried fireworks but doubt I would end up with anything as good as this.

What a beauty - I see it printed on canvas, large, and hung on a wall.

Terrific shot, Cara. I saw it once when you had it up for that short time on January 1. I liked it then and I like it now. So much for the eye to see and the viewer is so dragged in and down to the colour burst.

Brava!

You have a great blog here. I like checking out travel blogs much like yours at times. I have a blog myself which I hope will be a great resource for those looking to go on vacation. I want everyone to get that "vacation feeling" every time they come to my site. You know what I'm talking about.

I'd like to exchange links with you to help spread some traffic around between each other. Please let me know if this is possible. Until then, keep up the good work.

This is awesome! The fireworks alone would be great, but the reflections on all the buildings makes is absolutely fabulous!

It's not easy shooting fireworks, but this is a great photo.
