A River Runs Through It!

There is a lake of water in our street right now...

Some houses didn't fare too well (you can just make out the roof of my flats beyond the white house) but the peak was a metre less than we had feared. We can't get around to check right now but we think probably about 30cm/a foot of water got above our floorboards.
(That's up 2 flights of stairs from the carpark)

Friends of ours who live in the house with the maroon coloured roof have water 3/4 of the way up to their ceiling. We helped them scramble out of their house with all their most treasured possessions on Tuesday night. It took us all by surprise...

Luckily the waters are receding quickly and the weather this morning is beautiful. I'm hoping to get into our place tomorrow or saturday. The community atmosphere is amazing. We have had lots of offers of help and support from people all over the place. Thanks to everyone.

Sorry to see Cara, I hope your mob and your neighbours can keep it together during the coming weeks.

So sorry to hear that your place has been affected. Your words and photos certainly help illustrate the effect of the flood at a personal level. Best of luck with the clean up and many people in Sydney are doing all they can to support those affected up north.

Astounding images, Cara. Which suburb are you in? I have learnt just so much about the topography of the Brisbane area over the last little while.

Chin up and take care. All the sight-seers are a bit of a worry.

Bloody Hell! Still, it could have been worse. All I can do is wish you well for the coming days and weeks.

Dear me. It's hard to imagine the damage the flooding has caused. Your photos really bring it home, Cara. Glad to hear, just now, that the peak wasn't quite as high as expected but goodness, high enough! Glad to know you are OK and just know people all over the world are thinking of the folk in Queensland.

Thanks to all for your kind comments.

Peter - cheers for your offer - we have an army of friends and strangers who have set aside their time, energy and power tools to get things cleaned up a bit. besides which... aren't all the roads blocked from up there??

Julie - we're in West End and chin is most definitely up! (I'm looking at the room half empty, not half full)

Observer - this is Hoogley Street looking towards the ferry stop. Went for a walk around near Forbes St. yesterday but it was blocked off. All those roads around there have been affected. Also I've never seen it so busy - cars and people everywhere.

Cara, I hope things there can get better quickly for you and yours. Well, for everyone affected by those devastating floods. I've been looking at all the online news reports, photos, and videos. My friend luckily lives in a suburb that'a not affected directly. Best wishes to all with flood troubles in QLD.

This is what friends are for. This kind of thing brings out the best in people. Pleased to see that you look on the bright side of life as the Monty Python song goes.

Hey Cara and those around you,

Pretty pics, shame about the situation!

As soon as water goes down here and we can clear rocks across our causeway, we will be in the big smoke .. bringing guerney for hosing out, gum boots, manpower, and humour for the clean-up ...

Hope to catch up maybe.
Hang in there ... it will get better.

ps is this a 'get out of jail free' card for those two reformed smokers we know who had a bet?

Best wishes from Astoria, Oregon. So sorry you all have to deal with this. Your photos are amazing, and are now part of a history-making event. . . . We're hearing about you around the world.

So pleased to hear you have help Cara. Hope you were able to get some important possessions out in time, or up higher. All the best.
The scale of destruction is incomprehensible isn't it? Your photos and story help people to realize what is going on!

Nothing on the Friday. So, update us when you can.

Watching people swoosh the mud from their houses today is heart-breaking. The stench must be over-whelming.

Saw a bevy of images on the Australian from various streets in West End. The sodden piles of now-useless stuff is tough to look at from this distance. Cannot image how you guys must have to psyche yourselves up for this!!
