These are also called Heirloom tomatoes. I suppose $10 a kilo a bit more expensive than the bog standard tomatoes you can buy in the supermarket but they taste better too. And if you like, you can save a few and squash them into the ground for your own home grown! The difference between these and the normal hybrid varieties is that these seeds will produce top quality fruit season after season.

Shade mesh works wonders around and over tomato plants to keep the possums off them. I gave up on having them in my yard because I have so many of the darn animals around... they'd not only eat my tomatoes but also strip my poor little Basil plants to nothing just as a garnish! :(

It all depends on the type you get. however, if you buy the thick type, you can roll it up or take it off the plant during the day and put it on and weigh it down with bricks at night to keep their greedy little mitts off your tomatoes.
For fruit fly, just plant the companion plant Stinky Jordon around the base of the tomatoes and you don't get those nasty bugs.
