Scramble Crossing

I hadn't come across a scramble crossing until I moved to Brisbane. Do you have them where you are? The traffic at a crossroads stops in both directions and there is something of a free-form pedestrian phase where you can pretty much walk in any direction you like.

They have a lot of these in the Netherlands for cyclists. I wish there were more for pedstrians in the suburbs here in Brissy; it takes forever to cross some roads...

I never heard of that, but I can see where it would really be pedestrian friendly. But, I live in Chicago and I think the drivers wouldn't like it very much.

It's funny how your perspective changes depending upon whether you're walking or driving...

Melbourne has one or two of them. Ironbridge, on the other hand...

Have you seen "Smoke" with Harvey Keitel? This picture reminds me of that movie. All the stories in one snapshot.

Cool beans!! That is really pretty neat -- oh, my wife says that she almost emigrated to Brisbane in 1960 -- lucky for me she came to the States. [Is there an Arnold Hoppe still living there?]

Not that I know of, Stan! But there are about 2 million of us in Brisbane so he could be out there somewhere.

Linda - I'm with you! We've been trying to get one near our school but I think the crossing has to be busy day and night for them to even consider making it a scramble.

Joanna, Manish, Alan - thankyou!

Pet Sitter - I have seen that movie and I love it. Makes me want to move to Brooklyn!

Great shot, with the people walking in different directions.
No, we don't have this in Germany, but we do have large pedestrian zones in downtown.

We don't have many human pedestrians on our bush road but right now it's certainly all a bit of a wallaby scramble crossing.

They bound along in front of the car, they leap off to one side of the road and then back, they scatter and then suddenly regroup - harrowing driving!

Sadly, despite all care, for a few it becomes a scramble to wallaby heaven.

I remember there were a few scramble crosses in London; and they were the first ones I came across in 1997.

When I came home, I found these ones here in Brissie! :D
