It's the first of the month which means it's the City Daily Photo theme day. This month's theme, as you can see, is "Under Construction". To warm me up, I've decided to go back to balmy February and re-visit the Lego installation that was in the Gallery of Modern Art's "Art in the 21st Century" exhibition.
The huge hands-on display of thousands of classic white Lego bricks encourages you to get in there and start constructing. Not surprisingly, when the little kids had long since found other things to take their attention, it was the adults who remained, sometimes for hours, lost in the joy of a toy that usually reaches only a fraction of its potential.
The installation is the brainchild of Olafur Eliasson and purchased by the GoMA in 2005.
It's called "The cubic structural evolution project (2004)"

Loved this when you first posted, Cara. Today's overhead shot is just great. Good also to see so many males in there having a go. Now, somewhere I read about this just yesterday. No no ... not read ... saw it on ABC24. Is it coming south perhaps? But you said that GoMA purchased it ... mmm ...
Good story for the Theme Day.
Perfect for Theme Day! The first photo is superb, the angle, the contrast, a master piece.
And I love LEGO, and my boys too.

Awesome shots for theme day.
Great shots! Julie: GoMA does send this around Oz in its travelling exhibitions programme so you might very well see it outside Brisbane. I hope you do get to experience it. I just love interactive art, and GoMA does seem to show a lot of these types of works because they focus on contemporary art. I think interactive works make art accessible to many people who wouldn't normally think that they like art. Often, when it's fun like this, they discover that they do, and, in my opinion, that can only be a good thing.
Fascinating. Great shots.
Really good take on the theme.
Cara this is just fantastic! I am yet to see all entries on the theme but I can't think of a better idea. I'm just flabbergasted.
On a sad note these amazing skyscrapers emerging from piles of rubble remind me of ground zero in NYC.
But I love the concept and as an adult, no doubt I'd be tempted to be one of those who stay one for ever! :-)
wow, very impressive !
Fantastic !
What a work !!!

Building the city, literally.
What a splendid idea!
Great shots for the theme! But lego without colours, seems unthinkable (makes excellent pictures, though!).
The photos are amazing! I remember going to Legoland with my hen 4 year-old son, and being surprised that he spent most of the visit admiring the lego "cities" on display.
