Being the first of the month, it's a theme day for members of the City Daily Photo community and this month the theme is statues. This is the Queen Victoria statue outside the Treasury Heritage Hotel (formally the Land Registary Building) in Queen's Park. Unveiled in 1906 (5 years after she died), it's by English sculptor Sir Thomas Brock who did the big Imperial Memorial outside Buckingham Palace among many others and is a replica of one he did in Portsmouth, England. She's a pretty imposing figure up on her plinth, her dark bronze features contrasting sharply with the floaty nymphs behind her.
Did you know... Queensland was originally going to be called "Cooksland" but they decided to change it in her honour.

What lovely detail and perspective. Didn't know about the Queensland name, I think it was for the better.
There are so many grand statues of Queen Victoria in Australia and this one certainly is too.

Hi Cara, saw your comment over at Arnaud's place in India, and thought gosh, it's been a little while. Hope all is well in Brisbane, even if a bit wet. My daughter is dreaming of returning, she loved it there...

All Little Things I Like
Oh, I like the deeply hollowed out eyes. You captured it so well. Queensland is definitely a better name.
The statue and sculptures are all magnificent and your wonderful photo really shows off their beauty. Fantastic shot.
And yes, Queensland sounds so much better than Cooksland. :)
No no no no ... I would go for Cooksland any old day.
