Christmas Shopping
Queen Street Mall in the city, busy with Christmas shoppers. It always raises a quizzical eyebrow with me... the snowflake decorations. I get the symbolism... but it's 30 degrees!
Yes, my post on Thursday is a belly-ache about just this particular trait. So many visitors to my blog find it hard to grasp that Christmas could be in summer. It is a form of cultural imperialism.
As a child, I always felt ripped off at Christmas time. Every Christmas book I had ever read spoke of snow flakes gently falling and kids making snowmen. I just didn't understand why I couldn't experience it too.
This, to me, is interesting. I have always known cold and snow and winter for Christmas, as I live in the U.S. However, I know that some members of my family still don't experience "real" winter, because they do not get snow in Florida or Arizona. Therefore, seeing people in shorts during Christmastime is a bit of a bafflement, because--this year, definitely--there is always snow.
