There is a phenomenon in Australia whereby a business holder will construct something big associated with that business (usually out of fibre-glass) and it will become something of a tourist attraction. Personally, I have visited the Big Lobster (Kingston, S.A.), the Big Banana (Coff's Harbour, NSW), the Big Cherries (Young, NSW), the Big Merino (Goulburn, NSW) and the Big Prawn (Ballina, NSW). I have also driven past the Big Shell, the Big Pumpkin, the Big Mower and the Big Pineapple all in Queensland but the novelty was wearing a bit thin by then so we kept driving.Anyway. This is a picture of a big Cicada. It's much more understated than the other big things. Infact I think it would be insulted if it was associated with the "big" stuff; far too classy. It sits on an island in the middle of a busy busway looking pretty and - if you sneak up close and try not to get run over - you can actually hear it. It makes cicada noises!

ReplyDeleteI visited the big banana in Coffs Harbour but I'd never heard of the Big cicada. I still don't quite understand why it's sitting there? Is it meant to be a piece of art ? Great choice for this theme day anyway.

ReplyDeleteLachezar - this round bit at the front is the head - with two big steel eyes with the little metal balls in them - and two wings to the back... hope this helps!

ReplyDeleteI noticed this sculpture on my last visit there and and was really quite impressed at its simplicity and beauty. If I remember correctly its wings have a lovely rainbow effect in daylight, much like a real cicada - I'm sure there's a technical term for that but I can't remember.
This is a nice photo - I would love to see it for myself all lit up at night.
Oh I see the cicada now -- but it is a lovely photo even if one doesn't know what it is! I'm not too sure about giant bugs, though :-)

That thing of the big pineapple etc is a copy of what they do in America I suppose. Pretty photo although hard to see it's a cicada. Beautiful colours and lights in the photo.
