Did you ever read Eric Carle's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar? My quote for this photo is "that night he had a stomach ache".
I realise my thumb is more in focus than the caterpillar but you get a general idea of the size of the thing...huge!!

Wondering if it was a silk worm? Thought it looked a bit like one.
Did you squish him?
No! Well... it's not in my garden so I have left the problem with my friend. Creatures get to a certain size (not very big really) and then I am very uncomfortable about squishing them. I think I am scared they will get me back.
